The reason we like this movie has nothing to do with the fact that it centers around a wedding. The family drama surrounding this wedding is probably the last thing you want your videographer to capture. Kym (Anne Hathaway) is released from rehab for a day to attend her sister Rachel’s (Rosemarie Dewitt) wedding. We get a glimpse into Kym’s addiction that has ripped through the family on more than one occasion. But the film always makes sure to remind you that this is also a family that loves each other deeply no matter what. The cinematography weaves in and out of hand held, home video footage making you feel as if you were an invited guest taking it all in. I must admit, I was a bit surprised when I found out that Anne Hathaway was going to be playing the recovering drug addict in the film. I now understand why she was nominated for an Oscar.
This is one of those where you don’t want to pull your eyes off the screen. It is both uncomfortable and heartbreaking, with some happy moments mixed in. Rachel will get married, and we can’t deny we have a thing for weddings.
